Dr. James Doherty OD
Dr. James Doherty grew up in Walpole, Massachusetts, a rural suburb of Boston, Massachusetts. He was selected for honors classes starting in junior high and continued his advanced placement until his graduation from high school. He received special recognition for achieving the highest ACT test score in biology of any student at his school. Upon graduation he attended Providence College in Rhode Island majoring in pre-medical studies. He gained early admittance in Illinois College of Optometry after achieving an average test score above the 95th percentile on the Optometry College Aptitude Test (OCAT's). During optometry school he took extra classes to achieve his Bachelor in Science degree in Visual Sciences and then graduated with his Doctorate in Optometry. Upon graduation Doherty worked closely with three pediatricians for five years in a family medical clinic in Chicago. While there he attended mostly to the visual needs of children from the age of two and their parents.

He also gained experience in Wesley Jessen's Eye Care Center on Michigan Avenue in Chicago where he worked with patients that would fly in from around the country to be fitted with specialty contact lenses for keratoconus and presbyopia.
In 1982 he was offered the American Vision Center franchise located in Waukegan which allowed the development of his concept of one hour service in a mall environment. In 1988 a new private practice, AccuVISION, was opened in Lindenhurst to better serve his patients in western Lake County. Due to the success of the Waukegan office in 1994 he was offered the American Vision franchise at 20 North Michigan Avenue in Chicago directly across from Grant Park. Once again his patient care philosophy of fast quality service from a well-trained staff, state-of-the-art instrumentation, and a large inventory of frames turned an office close to shutting its doors into one that annually won the President's Award for Best Patient Service. In 1995 the First Vision in Round Lake Beach was close to bankruptcy when Dr. Doherty took it over. With the implementation of the same standards applied at his other offices it has grown to become the largest optical in northwest Lake County after moving to its new location in 2005.
The Waukegan office was moved to its Gurnee Mill's location in 2000. Dr. Doherty is proud of the fact that this office is the only Vision Service Plan or VSP- authorized provider of eye care on Sundays in Lake County. The tremendous patient growth at the Michigan Avenue office required a move in 2003 to double its size at a new street-level location near the corner of Wacker and North Michigan across from the new Trump Tower. The newest AccuVISION opened in Mundelein in 2007 saving many of our Wauconda, Libertyville and Mundelein patients on the drive time to the Round Lake Beach location. Recently, the American Vision Centers on Michigan Avenue and in Gurnee Mills were renamed to Dr. Doherty's private practice name AccuVISION.
For many years Dr. Doherty has been researching the cost savings to patients of merging several specialties in his offices. After attending training classes and demonstrations on various aesthetic procedures and instruments, he founded the company AccuVISION & Aesthetics in 2005. In association with the appropriate certified and insured professionals his new company offers Microdermabrasion, Intense Pulse Light (IPL) hair and age spot removal, IPL acne treatment and permanent make-up at pricing below other providers in Lake County.
Dr. Doherty lives on Fox Lake where he enjoys great sunsets, boating, snowmobiling, tennis, and skiing. His son Tyler attends Bradley University on a Presidential Scholarship with a major in business. His daughter Taryn attends Grant High School where she attends honor classes. She is also a three sport athlete on the varsity track, tennis and cheerleading teams. She hopes to join the practice as an optometrist someday.
Dr. Doherty would like to thank all of his patients for their support and greatly appreciated referrals that have allowed AccuVISION to become one of the largest locally owned doctor practices in Illinois. Our ability to offer state-of-the-art service and instrumentation from a well-educated staff resides in your continued support. Dr. Doherty personally reads all patient surveys filled out from his website. Please include an email address if you would like any issues responded to.
